Understanding that the best communication
is face-to-face, District President Mark Blondin directed 751
Business Representatives to reach out to the shop floor and hold
crew meetings to update members on negotiations.
From Frederickson to Everett, reps
have been out in the shops giving members that face-to-face interaction
that is critical to the negotiation process. The meetings will
continue throughout negotiations.
Blondin stated, "These negotiations are perhaps the most
critical in the history of our Union. Members don't simply want
information over the internet or via flyers. They deserve to meet
with Union reps and have their questions answered in person. It
is also very important that negotiators remain in touch with the
shop floor and understand members' issues and concerns. These
meetings provide an avenue for the two-way communication that
is required to ensure the bargaining table accurately conveys
membership concerns."
The meetings are an open forum where members are encouraged to
get involved, voice their opinions and offer suggestions. The
goal is to listen and gain information to further our agenda in
negotiations, as well as to engage our members so they feel a
part of the negotiation process. Members are asked questions such
as: Are we providing enough communication? Do they understand
the strike vote? Are there any issues you specifically would like
to see addressed in the contract?
In each meeting, reps focus on answering members' questions, providing
updates on negotiations and dispensing pertinent information.
Most members welcomed the chance for face-to-face contact with
the Union and an opportunity to both voice their concerns and
vent their frustrations.
The insecurity and uncertainty our members feel in their jobs
came through loud and clear. Yet other more specific contract
suggestions were also offered from members, such as:
· Put an end to the Friday night transfers that mandate
a new assignment to your next shift on Monday. Give employees
more time to make the transfer without threats.
· Stronger shift preference language.
· Revise lateral transfer language so members have right
of refusal.
If you would like to have a meeting in your area, please ask your
Steward to schedule a meeting with the business rep. The input
members provide will prove invaluable in these negotiations.
