In October,
the IAM/Boeing Quality Through Training Program (QTTP) delivered
computer support personnel directly to the 737 and 757 shop floor
in Renton to help members with their computer needs. This unique
service resulted from input received through the QTTP Skill Center
Advisory Committee, which is comprised of shop floor and management
employees charged with addressing training concerns of our members.
This on-site, shop floor tutoring helps our members better utilize
the computer applications they need to do their job without ever
having to leave their work area to attend a special class. This
convenient support service becomes even more important when management
insists they can't release people to go to classes because of
production schedules, even though everyone admits that computer
skills are a key training need. When you factor in the mandatory
overtime many members are working, this shop floor service is
even more critical.
QTTP Instructor Joe Steiling and QTTP Program Manager Gary Cotton
are providing the initial training support for both first and
second shift. Placards with cell phone contact numbers and coverage
schedules are located on the area computer workstations throughout
the factory - making it easy for members to get ahold of the instructors.
In addition, the instructors have also been attending crew meetings
to alert members to the service and encourage individuals to use
this new service. Questions range from how to reset a password
to setting up e-mail accounts to accessing and using the various
computer programs required to perform his/her job.
The initial response has been very positive and kept the instructors
busy answering questions and providing assistance.
Dave Sacksteder is one of our members who has already utilized
the shop floor instructors on several occasions. Dave noted, "When
I worked in Everett, I took a three or four-hour class, which
was good training. However, sometimes in a class you don't feel
you can ask a question because it will hold others up. This service
ensures your individual needs are addressed and is much more helpful.
I didn't have to leave the floor and was still available if a
question came up about my work."
Eventually this program will expand to include all areas of Renton
operations on first and second shift.
QTTP Program Manager Tom Lux who has been instrumental in this,
added, "This computer support initiative shows the value
of our Skill Center Advisory Committees. People on the shop floor
know the training needs of their area and can come up with some
creative solutions to address those needs. We would like to work
with more areas to establish Advisory Committees."
