Strike Update -- October 1, 2008
Today, members on the Seattle picket line were joined by Congressman Jim McDermott. The Congressman talked with members and pledged his support. Every day additional support is coming our way from elected officials, community leaders, other unions and concerned citizens. Members appreciate the support and generous donations from across Puget Sound and throughout the country.
The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) continues their investigation into Boeing's unlawful conduct throughout these negotiations. The NLRB is currently interviewing members who experienced the direct dealing and one-on-one pressure and coercion during negotiations. Again, if you encountered this, please forward your information to ULP@iam751.org so we can add your experience to our list of evidence in our Unfair Labor Practice charges.
Labor Neighbor Program
Because it is a very important election year, the Union continues to encourage members to help with the Labor Neighbor Program. This unique opportunity allows members to talk to other Union brothers and sisters in the labor movement about the importance of voting on November 4th. Remember: Anything we gain at the bargaining table can be lost in legislation so it is important to get labor friendly candidates elected. If you would like to help with the Labor Neighbor Program, send an e-mail with your contact information to David Henry at davidh@iam751.org
Voter Registration:
If you or your family members need to register to vote for the upcoming General Election on November 4th, you can do so this Saturday at any of the strike check distribution locations. Keep in mind that this Saturday is the cutoff to register and still vote on November 4th. If you have children who are 18 years or older living at home or other family members wanting to register, bring them along this Saturday so they vote in this very important election. You may also do any status change -- address, name change or register for permanent absentee ballot.

In addition, to the free flu shots, there will be bone density testing, glucose testing and cholesterol checks, as well as free refreshments and valet parking.
COBRA Information
The Union has put together a flyer and web page with useful information to help members determine when and if to elect COBRA coverage, click here to view. Remember: Members have 60 days from September 30th to decide to elect coverage and then 45 days from the date you elect coverage to make the first payment. When a member elects COBRA coverage any time during that 60 days, the coverage is retroactive to October 1st.
Information in the Boeing packet incorrectly stated you had to elect coverage by November 5th. Boeing indicated they are sending out a postcard to correct this error in their information packet.
Tennessee Machinists on Strike at Vought
Nearly 1,000 Machinists are on strike at Vought Aircraft Industries in Nashville, TN, after voting to reject a company offer that would replace the existing pension plan for many employees with a risky 401(k) plan.
Members of Local 735 in Nashville, TN, assemble wing and tail structures for commercial and military aircraft customers, including Airbus, Gulfstream, Cessna and Lockheed Martin.
"The contract offer is riddled with takeaways," said IAM Southern Territory GVP Bob Martinez. "Besides the pension, the offer erodes seniority rights, has substandard pay increases, and increases out-of-pocket expenses for health care. The workers are right to reject it and the IAM stands with them."
Despite Tennessee's status as a right-to-work (for less) state, the bargaining unit at Vought is keenly aware of the value of full membership, with more than 90 percent taking full advantage of their collective bargaining rights.
Here is another profitable aerospace company using the same strategy as Boeing and hoping members would accept a substandard contract. District 751 has sent a letter of support and is also offering assistance in their fight.
