Members Show Strong Support for Union Negotiators with 99% Vote

July 16, 2008 -- In a tremendous show of solidarity, thousands of Machinists' Union members walked off the job today and filled Key Arena. Ninety-nine percent of those members voted YES to grant the Negotiating Committee strike sanction authority. This is one of the highest percentage strike authorization in recent history. The 99% includes members attending meetings in Seattle, Wichita, Portland and Edwards Air Force Base.

Special thanks to all the members who took the time to attend, as well as those who waited in the long lines after the meeting adjourned to cast their ballots. You came fired up and enthusiastic and sent Boeing a message It's Our Time This Time to make improvements in ALL areas of the contract.

District 751 President Tom Wroblewski stated in a press release, "Our members showed they understand It's Our Time This Time by taking their own time to attend this very important meeting and grant Union negotiators strike sanction. Our members came despite management e-mails and intimidation in crew meetings to stay at work. Our members shut down airplane manufacturing at the biggest aerospace company in the world because without our members there are no Boeing airplanes.

The 99% vote today sends a strong message It's Our Time This Time because we all know Boeing is all about numbers. In the past five years, Boeing after-tax profits exceeded $13 billion dollars – up over 828 percent, as a result of the hard work of our members. Airplane orders have also skyrocketed in the past five years – increasing by more than 560 percent and setting a record in 2007 with 1,413 orders. All this means Boeing is one of the most successful companies in the world and that It's Our Time Time to make improvements in ALL areas of the contract. Our members have done their part to make this Company profitable; It's Our Time This Time for workers to get their fair share," added Wroblewski

The vote today is a preliminary step in granting strike authorization that is required in the IAM Constitution to collect strike benefits in the event members reject the Company's last, best and final offer and vote to strike on September 3. A strike vote today is not an indication a strike is likely to occur.

Aerospace Machinists elated at GAO Tanker Decision
The Boeing Company protest of flawed bidding process upheld

SEATTLE, WA. The 60,000 active and retired members of Aerospace Machinists’ District Lodge 751 were jubilant by the strongly worded GAO Report on the Air Force’s procurement process on the Air Refueling Tanker. The Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress, responded to The Boeing Company’s protest of the Tanker awarded to European-based Airbus/EADS with a terse, 3-page document that indicated the Air Force made numerous errors in the decision.

“The GAO decision CLICK HERE is a victory for not only our members but every citizen who joined us in this fight,” said Tom Wroblewski, District Lodge 751 President. “It’s important to note that this was the first complaint Boeing ever filed, so they didn’t do this without strong conviction, and belief that we build the best planes in the world.”

“Our workers have been building Air Force Tankers for 67 years,” continued Wroblewski. “It was just inconceivable that the Air Force could pick Airbus, when they don’t have a factory in this country, or any workers. It’s even worse when you consider the Air Force picked Airbus/EADS, which is getting $18 billion bailouts.

“We are fired up and ready to go,” said Wroblewski. “Our 767 workers can get started on the tankers right here, right now. Our workers are ready to build the planes that defend America, because our workers have been defending America for generations. We stand ready to work with our Congressional Delegation, our allies, and The Boeing Company to bring the Tanker back home to America, where it belongs. This is a positive step for workers, for taxpayers and for Washington State, where the Tanker program would create 9,000 jobs and a $400 million annual boost to our local economy. We know this is the first step, but today all the members of the Aerospace Machinists are very proud to be American.”

Effective June 6, 2008, a 21 cent cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will be added to the hourly wage rate for IAM members at Boeing. This brings the total hourly COLA gain under the current contract to $1.30.

The new 21 cents was generated for the quarter February, March and April 2008. COLA is generated quarterly under the IAM contract and is based on the federal government’s Consumer Price Index. This is the final quarterly COLA payment under the current contract, which expires September 3, 2008.
