Description

Primary Duties: Assist Senior Gardener and Leadworker with horticultural tasks and park maintenance in geographic districts or special gardens. Water, monitor automatic irrigation systems; fertilize, prune, weed, edge, herbicide application, annual and perennial planting; pest and disease control. Maintain record keeping and reports. Use hand tools and operate various types of machinery and power equipment to do gardening and park maintenance. Assist Senior staff in the work unit in leading volunteer groups and parks staff to further district goals of horticultural excellence. General landscape maintenance and shrub, perennial, and annual plant care. Work as part of a team in planting and transplanting trees, and other plant materials, the construction and the maintenance of steps, walls, and trails, landscape installations, and major shrub-bed renovations. May supervise other staff and work with volunteer groups as necessary to fulfill mission.
Required Qualifications: The equivalent of two years experience in landscape maintenance. Washington Public Pesticide Operator license is required after appointment. Driver's License. Education may be substituted for experience. Plant I.D. skills, and knowledge of standard methods, materials, procedures, tools, and equipment associated with landscaping and gardening. Must be able to work with diverse group of park users, work outdoors and in all types of weather, work at extreme heights, able to lift 50 lbs and work safely in an environment that is noisy and congested. Operate motor vehicles to, between, and from work locations. Able to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
Desired Qualifications: Familiarity with word processing and spreadsheet software. Ability to operate many kinds of equipment used in landscape construction and maintenance including tractors, chippers, tillers, chain saws, sod cutters, power tools, hand tools, etc.
The following lists some of our current vacancies along with more specific descriptions:
Kubota Gardens (full-time) - This gardener position is 40% turf management and mowing and 60% weeding, pruning, planting, transplanting, mulching etc.  During peak season mowing is 60% of the job.
Sandpoint Property Maintenance (full-time) - Looking for a creative self-starter who enjoys working alone, has a solid background in native vegetation and a demonstrated ability to deal with diverse horticultural challenges.
Horticulture Landscape Crew (full-time) - Strong emphasis on construction and installation. Work as part of a team in planting and transplanting trees, and other plant materials, the construction and maintenance of steps, walls and trails, landscape installations, major shrub bed renovations.  
Volunteer Park Conservatory (part-time) - The equivalent of three to five years work experience, skills and knowledge of tropical and subtropical plants in a conservatory or greenhouse setting. Extensive knowledge and maintenance of our special collections such as orchids, bromeliads or cactus are desired.
