JOURNEY LEVEL MECHANIC* - Pierce Transit

The Position:
An employee in this
position performs skilled mechanical tasks in preventive maintenance,
troubleshooting, and repair of natural gas and diesel powered vehicles and
equipment. Essential functions: systematic diagnosing of malfunctions to
include fuel, electrical systems, programmable logic controls and mechanical
systems. Also includes repairing, adjusting or replacing complete or integral
parts of natural gas, diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, drive trains
and differentials, lubrication, cooling, exhaust and air or hydraulic systems;
removing, rebuilding and replacing automatic transmissions in buses, trucks and
automobiles; inspecting, adjusting, troubleshooting and repairing of bus door
operation, air ride systems, steering systems, and wheelchair lifts; and
entering work order data on computers. Performs work with considerable
independent judgment; however, work is subject to inspection by the Assistant
Maintenance Manager or his delegate during progress and upon completion for
quality and conformity with specifications.
Wage: $23.47 per hour
Minimum Qualifications:
Required: Any
one of the following: 1) 3 years of journey-level mechanical work
experience in transit, bus or over-the-road coach maintenance; OR 2) Completion
of a recognized 2 year diesel mechanic vocational course of study plus 2 years
journey-level mechanical work; OR 3) Certification as a journey level diesel
mechanic by a private or public agency recognized by Pierce Transit; OR 4)
Completion of a recognized 4 year diesel mechanic apprentice program.
Desired: Journey level mechanical work experience on natural gas
or propane-powered spark ignited vehicles (bus or truck) or equipment.
Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of: Methods, materials, tools, and standard practices related
to the maintenance and repair of heavy-duty vehicles and equipment; principles
of spark-ignited or diesel powered engines; safety precautions followed in
heavy equipment repair shops.
Ability to: Perform essential functions including occasionally
moving, lifting, and maneuvering heavy objects in confined and/or awkward
spaces; use jacks, wrenches, grease guns, hydraulic hoists, cleaning materials
and other tools and equipment used in the service and repair of heavy
equipment; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; work with
other employees in a directed work team environment; conceptualize required
work through personal observation or a verbal description and determine what is
necessary to obtain quality results; perform computerized work order
procedures; pass federally required drug and alcohol testing.
Special Requirements:
Must be willing to work any shift (assignment to swing shift, graveyard
and/or weekends likely); possess a complete set of heavy equipment tools with a
roll-a-way toolbox and a valid Washington State driver's license at the time of
hire; be able to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License permit (with a
3rd party testing certificate) within 30 days of hire.

oversee a team of up to 8 volunteers in selecting program topics and guests,

School and District Improvement develops and markets products and processes to
assist schools, school districts, communities and states as they work to

children, youth and young adults. Through long-term partnerships with
associations and organizations and arrangements with a few selected sites, the
Center conducts research and development activities to establish improvement
and/or restructuring processes leading to improved results for students.
Through marketing and outreach strategies, processes and products developed
through the R&D work are made available to organizations throughout the
Northwest and beyond. This is an Executive Cabinet level management
position that provides leadership to the four Units within the Center including
Applying Research to Practice, Improving School Systems, Improving Teaching
Schoolwide, and Re-creating Secondary Schools. The person selected for this
position will report to the Deputy Executive Officer, and is expected to
participate with Center and NWREL staff on various teams and committees, reflect
the professional stature of the Laboratory, and adhere to NWREL policies and
procedures. Duties NWREL provides a challenging and professional environment
for individuals to lead research, development, training and assistance, and
dissemination efforts to influence the performance of school systems and
improve learning for both students and adults. The duties of the Center
Director shall include, but not be limited to, the following: Provide
institutional leadership by being a member of Cabinet; facilitating/coordinating
activities within the Center and across NWREL; and contributing to the regional
and national recognition of NWREL as a high quality research, development, and
service organization. Lead planning and development of the Center and

Proven resource development record, including proposal development to secure

Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated
ability to work collaboratively with staff and constituents in cross-unit initiatives.
Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines. Experience in using
computer systems, the internet, other technologies, and various software

Compensation Starting salary range: $78,410 - $100,000 per annum, plus a
