JOURNEY LEVEL MECHANIC* - Pierce Transit

The Position:

An employee in this position performs skilled mechanical tasks in preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of natural gas and diesel powered vehicles and equipment. Essential functions: systematic diagnosing of malfunctions to include fuel, electrical systems, programmable logic controls and mechanical systems. Also includes repairing, adjusting or replacing complete or integral parts of natural gas, diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, drive trains and differentials, lubrication, cooling, exhaust and air or hydraulic systems; removing, rebuilding and replacing automatic transmissions in buses, trucks and automobiles; inspecting, adjusting, troubleshooting and repairing of bus door operation, air ride systems, steering systems, and wheelchair lifts; and entering work order data on computers. Performs work with considerable independent judgment; however, work is subject to inspection by the Assistant Maintenance Manager or his delegate during progress and upon completion for quality and conformity with specifications.

Wage: $23.47 per hour

Minimum Qualifications:

Required:
Any one of the following: 1) 3 years of journey-level mechanical work experience in transit, bus or over-the-road coach maintenance; OR 2) Completion of a recognized 2 year diesel mechanic vocational course of study plus 2 years journey-level mechanical work; OR 3) Certification as a journey level diesel mechanic by a private or public agency recognized by Pierce Transit; OR 4) Completion of a recognized 4 year diesel mechanic apprentice program.

Desired: Journey level mechanical work experience on natural gas or propane-powered spark ignited vehicles (bus or truck) or equipment.

Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of:
Methods, materials, tools, and standard practices related to the maintenance and repair of heavy-duty vehicles and equipment; principles of spark-ignited or diesel powered engines; safety precautions followed in heavy equipment repair shops.

Ability to: Perform essential functions including occasionally moving, lifting, and maneuvering heavy objects in confined and/or awkward spaces; use jacks, wrenches, grease guns, hydraulic hoists, cleaning materials and other tools and equipment used in the service and repair of heavy equipment; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; work with other employees in a directed work team environment; conceptualize required work through personal observation or a verbal description and determine what is necessary to obtain quality results; perform computerized work order procedures; pass federally required drug and alcohol testing.

Special Requirements:

Must be willing to work any shift (assignment to swing shift, graveyard and/or weekends likely); possess a complete set of heavy equipment tools with a roll-a-way toolbox and a valid Washington State driver's license at the time of hire; be able to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License permit (with a 3rd party testing certificate) within 30 days of hire.

"Voices of Diversity" provides an opportunity for community members to tell the untold stories in their community as well as celebrate the diversity of cultural expression found in the Northwest. Stories on "Voices of Diversity" address such issues as racism, sexism and homophobia, as well as the realities of life for vulnerable and underserved populations such as immigrants, refugees, and homeless persons. The Coordinator will organize and train a core of volunteers to: a) develop requisite skills in live radio interviewing, broadcast writing, and board operating  b) maintain a regular production schedule  c) adhere to KBCS editorial standards d) foster values emphasizing group decision making, and  e) represent a diversity of ethnicities, economic backgrounds, life experiences, and sexual orientations in their stories The Coordinator will develop an organizational framework so that the group can continue to function as an independent team with minimal weekly management by paid staff. Under the supervision of the Public Affairs Director, the Coordinator will develop a training curriculum, oversee a team of up to 8 volunteers in selecting program topics and guests, and schedule and supervise "Voices of Diversity" pre-production and live broadcasts. The Coordinator will work with other pivotal public affairs staff members who coordinate and recruit volunteers. The training curriculum will include key elements such as: broadcast writing skills, basic journalistic standards, live and taped interview techniques, and the development of story ideas and community contacts. Faces East (Families and Parents Early Support) an early childhood development and school readiness networking group in East King County, is seeking proposals for a facilitator for a pilot project that will gather information from Latino families with children birth-12 and Bellevue School District staff in East Bellevue elementary schools. The overall goal is to increase communication between these two groups about how to improve school readiness among Latino children entering Bellevue Schools, and how to improve the ability of the schools to connect with Latino parents and make them feel more welcome.  The facilitator would work from mid-August through the end of November, 2004 obtaining information from Latino parents and East Bellevue teachers, write a report of the findings, and plan a community forum to share the results. This is a contracted, non-benefited, time limited position. Funds available for this position are $12,000 for the entire project. Requirements include: knowledge of the East Bellevue community, fluency in Spanish, skills in doing focus groups and excellent writing skills. Dismantle and overhaul all types of gasoline and diesel engines and their components; operate diagnostic test equipment, brake lathe, tire repair and tire balance equipment.  Qualifications: Two years fleet maintenance or vehicle repair shop experience with two years technical school and with commitment to complete ASE testing within two years OR combination of education and experience. Also requires: full set of hand tools; capable of using all test equipment and specialized tools along with valid driver's license with clean driving record for past three years. Desired Qualification: Transit fleet experience.  Hours and Compensation: This is a full time position paying $16.83 per hour plus benefits.
