Women's Committee Report - November 2006
Heather Barstow was the lucky winner of our beautiful quilt in the raffle drawing last month during the District Council meeting. And our Women's Committee is proud to announce that we raised $2,480.00 for Guide Dogs of America!!! That is awesome and couldn't have been done without the help of every single one of you who bought our tickets! Our thanks go to all of you for assisting our efforts to make it possible to help change the lives of visually impaired men and women.
Also, 31 volunteers joined our Committee at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk last month where Team 751 raised over $1,200. We have a small number of t-shirts from this event still for sale for $15.00 each. The American Cancer Society has been waging war against cancer for nearly a century, and their commitment to defeating the disease has never wavered. Their lifesaving efforts are funded exclusively by the generosity of donors like you. Thanks to all of you who braved the rain, wind and cold to give hope to cancer survivors.
Last, our Committee would like to talk about the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which falls on November 25th this year. In 1991, the United Nations adopted a resolution to bring awareness to the injustices and violence inflicted upon women because of their gender. This day marks the anniversary of three sisters from the Dominican Republic who were put to death for participating in political activities.
The IAM, in conjunction with our affiliate,
the International Transport Federation, is working to bring awareness
about the atrocities inflicted upon women around the world. This
is an opportunity for trade unions to educate global citizens
about the need to remove the fear of violence in the home and
workplace and eradicate the poverty, cultural and societal norms
that promote the oppression, discrimination and ill treatment
of women around the world. So, on November 25th, we will be wearing
a purple ribbon in support of International Eliminate Violence
Against Women Day. We have more at our table if you would like
to join us. Thank You!
