Women's Committee Report October 2002

In 2002, the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaign celebrates 17 years of educating women about breast cancer.

Death rates from breast cancer showed their first significant decline between 1989 and 1995, dropping 1.6 percent each year. Between 1995 and 1998, the decrease accelerated to a decline of 3.5 percent annually. The largest decreases occurred in younger women, both African American and Caucasian. These improvements are probably due to earlier detection and improved treatment.

During 2002 an estimated 203,500 new cases of breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the United States. NBCAM encourages all women to recognize the importance of early breast cancer detection by participating in National Mammography Day.

The third Friday in October each year is National Mammography Day, first proclaimed by President Clinton in 1993. On this day, or throughout the month, radiologists provide discounted or free screening mammograms. In 1999, more than 2,200 American College of Radiology (ACR) accredited facilities took part. In 2002, National Mammography Day will be celebrated on October 18.

Several national organizations have the list of facilities that participate in National Mammography Day. To learn which facilities in your area are taking part in the event, call:

American Cancer Society (800) 227-2345
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (800) 462-9273
National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations (NABCO) (888) 80-NABCO
Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organizations (800) 221-2141

The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "Fund Free Mammograms" for free (pink window in the middle). (There is nothing to sign up for and no cost to you.) The corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate a mammogram in exchange for advertising.
