Women's Committee Report - October 2003

The Women's Committee would like to thank our members and staff who participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk sponsored by the American Cancer Society on Sunday, October 5th. We would also like to thank everyone who made donations at last month's Local Lodge meetings. Together, we raised over $2,700 for this worthwhile cause. Anyone with outstanding pledges is asked to get them to Janeé at the Everett Union Hall as soon as possible.

October is officially Breast Cancer Awareness month. In the year 2003, 211,300 women will learn they have breast cancer. 1,300 men will get the same news and 40,200 people are expected to die from it.

The next and last event we will be doing this year is the Holiday Toy give-away for our laid off members on Saturday, December 13th. Last year was so successful and helpful to 127 of our laid off members and their families that we decided we need to do it again.

Last year the King County Labor Agency received a huge donation of toys and allowed us to help distribute them to our members. This year they are not expecting to get the same donation but do have a small supply left over from last year and will allow us to have some of what's left, but it won't be anywhere close to what we need. Since many families are still suffering, we will be doing a toy drive and donation drive to help make this happen. So between now and December 9th, we will be taking donations of toys and cash. You can bring them with you to the lodge meetings next month and or you can drop them off anytime between 8:00 a.m.- 5:00pm at the Union Hall nearest you.

We will also need your help in putting out the word to any laid off members that will need our help this year. Names and phone numbers should be given to our Secretary, Janeé Bromiley, in Everett or just have the laid off member call Janeé themselves.

More information on this event will be forthcoming soon in flyers and on the website.
