President Biden's recently announced initiative to raise tariffs on unfair imports from China in a range of strategic industries, including semiconductors, solar panels, automobiles, and more, was praised by labor, environmental, and other organizations as a key step for protecting good-paying jobs and sustainable development.
Despite some initial media coverage about the president’s tariff plan, however, most Americans still haven’t heard about its benefits. A current public comment period on the tariffs is an opportunity to educate your members about an important element of President Biden’s worker-centered trade agenda and get folks voicing their support for this important policy win.

The Employee Free Choice Act has been signed into law!
Senate Bill 5778 - Protecting the rights of workers to refrain from attending meetings or listening to their employer's speech on political or religious matters.
SB 5778 Prohibits an employer from taking adverse action against an employee for refusal to attend or participate in an employer-sponsored meeting or refusal to listen to speech, the primary purpose of which is to communicate the employer's opinion concerning religious or political matters.
"Political matters" means matters relating to elections for political office, political parties, proposals to change legislation, proposals to change regulations, and the decision to join or support any political party or political, civic, community, fraternal, or labor association or organization.
"Religious matters" means matters relating to religious affiliation and practice, and the decision to join or support any religious organization or association.
Under the bill, employers will also not be able to require workers to attend meetings where they are told that attempts to unionize will lead to layoffs or loss of benefits.
The legislation does not prevent employers from requiring attendance at job training or training to reduce and prevent workplace harassment or discrimination.
SB 5778 simply protects the rights of workers by making religious or political meetings voluntary.
This Bill went into effect June 6.

Confirm Julie Su as Secretary of the Department of Labor!
Julie Su has made a career out of representing not only workers, but the most vulnerable workers in America.
Her record speaks for itself. As a young attorney representing trafficked Thai government workers outside of Los Angeles, she won $4 million in stolen wages. Her case set a huge precedent, and that was just the beginning of a storied career.
The problem? Well-heeled lobbyists and corporate special interests are spending big to block Su's confirmation because they know she puts working people first. Workers deserve a labor secretary who will fiercely defend us.
Take a Stand! Please sign your name in support of the Richard L. Trumka PRO (Protecting the Right to Organize) Act today!
The Richard L. Trumka (PRO) Act restores fairness to the economy by strengthening the federal laws that protect workers' rights to join a union. It protects the basic right to join a union by empowering workers to exercise their right to organize, holds employers accountable for violating workers' rights and secures free, fair and safe union elections.
Please click on the link below to sign your name in support so we can continue to have the rights to collectively bargain, safety from laws such as "right-to-work" along with obtaining justice when corporations retaliate with the help of the NLRB.

3 Vital Bills to our Agenda YOU should be following and they're on the move!
House Bill 1216 - Concerning Clean Energy Siting and Permitting
In order to bring our clean energy economy and workforce to Washington state, the first step is having businesses build their infrastructure to be able to produce clean energy. In the past, our state's siting and permitting processes have been quite challenging and HB 1216 updates and streamlines our state's siting and permitting processes to help turn our clean energy economy into a reality. This bill passed through both the House and Senate and was signed into law by the Governor with an effective date of July 23, 2023.
Senate Bill 5447 - Promoting the Alternative Jet Fuel Industry in Washington
This bill is also a huge hitter for our agenda, as it is directly tied to Aerospace, manufacturing jobs and clean energy in Washington state! This bill creates a preferential business and operation tax rate for the manufacturing and wholesaling of alternative jet fuels. The idea of this is to encourage sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) producers to build facilities here in Washington that will create more great family wage manufacturing jobs. This bill passed through both the House and Senate and was signed into law by the Governor with an effective date of July 23, 2023.
House Bill 1525 - Concerning the Eligibility for working connections child care benefits for persons participating in state registered apprenticeships
This bill is a huge deal for our members at the Machinist Institute! Let's be honest, most often than not, when in an apprenticeship program, you are working a full-time job as well and any extra help could make a huge difference. This bill will expand the eligibility for the Working Connections Child Care program benefits to apply to persons in the first 12 months while participating in a state registered apprenticeship when they meet certain additional criteria. This bill passed through both the House and Senate and was signed into law by the Governor with an effective date of July 23, 2023.
