Medical Options During a Strike .pdf

Take care of whatever appointments you can before September 30th. If you can get a 90 days supply of medication prior to September 30th, do so. After September 30th you will have 60 days to elect COBRA coverage for those you would like covered. You do not have to elect any coverage until it's absolutely needed. But be sure to make that choice before the 60 days is up. Then, from the time you elect coverage, you will have 45 additional days in which to make a payment.

NEW - IAM 751 Members will not have access to their Boeing health insurance plans, as the company will cut off access starting tomorrow Sept 30th.

Thanks to legislative work by IAM District 751, members affected by this can apply for health and dental insurance through the Washington Health Benefit Exchange under new provisions in Senate Bill 5632, sponsored by Washington State Sen. Karen Keiser (D-Des Moines) and passed in 2024.

Striking workers now have a 60-day special enrollment period before and after losing employer-sponsored coverage, making it possible to find a plan through Washington Healthplanfinder. This special enrollment period will allow striking Boeing workers to apply for coverage as early as tomorrow, with plans effective as soon as their employer coverage ends on September 30, 2024.

Members are advised to evaluate healthcare needs carefully before purchasing COBRA or using the Washington Health Plan Finder. The Union can't guarantee but will work to ensure any negotiated strike settlement agreement will eventually reimburse COBRA-related costs, so workers should be cautious about purchasing external plans unless necessary.

How to Apply for Washington Healthplanfinder Coverage:

Visit wahealthplanfinder.org or use the WAPlanfinder mobile app.
Create or sign in to an account.
Fill out an application, report a "loss of other coverage," and enter the last day of employer coverage to initiate a special enrollment period.
Review plan options and enroll in a new plan.
For help, select "Get Support" on the homepage.
When employer-sponsored healthcare resumes, be sure to cancel any plan obtained through Washington Healthplanfinder

Picket Duty

Is just that, a duty to ensure a successful outcome. Technically under the IAM Constitution, there is a requirement to sign in weekly for duty in order to qualify for Strike Pay. "Whenever a strike has been ordered or approved by the G.L., each member eligible to receive benefits shall sign the strike record weekly, or indicate his/her presence weekly, using automated methods that have been approved by the E.C." We needed flexibility in this requirement due to the size of our membership. In addition, the need for members to find temporary employment we have been very flexible. However, you should do your part whenever you can.
Change picket duty - We cannot keep up with the amount of requests for changes to picket duty. However, we do ask that you do what you can to meet the time slots and day of the week whenever possible.
